Fisher & Sons Wins Award for Wilson Motors Project
Burlington, WA, May 12, 2009 – At the recent Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association awards banquet, Fisher & Sons won an 'Excellence in Concrete Construction' award for the Wilson Motors project in Bellingham WA.
As the award winner in the pervious concrete division, the project was recognized because of both its size—nearly 100,000 sq. ft.of surface, as well as the valuable environmental role the paving performs in keeping run-off out of the nearby Whatcom Creek.
The pervious materials used in the Wilson Motors project provided an environmentally friendly solution to the oily run-off common to large parking areas. Water, mixed with any collected contaminants, soaks through the surface and collects in quarry spall retention area where it is filtered before being released into the ground water system. Because the dealership was designed with portions of surface porous asphalt and other portions pervious concrete, an unusual opportunity presented itself to do a head-to-head comparison of two environmentally sound solutions developed by the asphalt and concrete industries, both new to the marketplace.
As general contractor on the project, Fisher & Sons teamed with Ferndale Ready Mix and Gravel, 20/20 Engineering and Civil, and with Sid Nesbit as architect. The Wilson Motors project was completed in the fall of 2008.
