Puget Sound Energy Skagit Service Center

Owner:
Puget Sound Energy

Project Size:
63,670 sq. ft.

Facility Type:
Facility

Location:
Burlington, WA

When Puget Sound Energy's Skagit Service Center was slated to close due to a highway expansion, the utility company used the opportunity to create a leading-edge sustainable facility.

PSE chose Fisher & Sons as general contractor for the state-of-the-art facility which meets thedesign and construction standards for LEED Silver Certification, as set by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The facility includes 30,000 sq. ft. of office space, a fleet service building, wire workshop with a four-ton bridge crane, and a warehouse. The steel structure has a concrete foundation with glazed curtain walls and features multiple surface treatments including exterior metal siding, and concrete masonry unit veneer.

The building envelope design is 50% more energy efficient than the national standard for similar buildings. Water is the major coolant of the building's air temperature rather than compressors or refrigerants—making it the first building in the Northwest to implement an indirect evaporative cooling system. The temperature of each work station is individually controlled, balancing the air temperature with exterior fresh air, rather than recycled air, whenever possible.

As general contractor on this project, Fisher & Sons coordinated an array of subcon-tractors to meet the exacting design standards, along with the mechanical and electrical engineering complexities to deliver PSE a facility which demonstrates the company's commitment to conservation and energy efficiency.
